This season, as we reflect on gratitude and giving, I want to share something close to my heart.
My niece, Hazel, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy—a condition that affects muscle coordination and movement. Hazel faces a lifelong battle, but she does so with unmatched courage, light, and joy.
Her smile brightens every room, and her spirit reminds us daily what true strength looks like.

Giving Back – Supporting Children with Cerebral Palsy
Hazel is surrounded by incredible therapists and medical professionals who work tirelessly to improve the lives of children living with cerebral palsy. But even with the best care, cerebral palsy is a daily, lifelong challenge—not only for the child navigating it, but for the family loving them through it.
Hazel’s parents, Lindsey and Dave, are the kind of people who quietly do the impossible every single day. They work tirelessly to give Hazel the very best care and advocate for her with steady determination and deep love. They are constantly researching, coordinating appointments, celebrating progress, and carrying the hard moments with grace.

Hazel is also surrounded by siblings who love her fiercely. Her older brother Tripp is protective, tender, and proud of her in a way that is impossible not to notice. And her twin sister Anora is her built-in best friend—walking beside her with natural compassion and loyalty. Their bond is something special, and watching Anora cheer her on in quiet ways is one of the sweetest reminders of what family really means.
And Hazel is loved not only under her own roof, but by a whole extended family on both sides who adore her. She is surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins—people who see her whole heart, who celebrate her victories, and who hold her through the hard days. She is constantly covered in love.

But I also want to say what is true: it can be heartbreaking.
Hazel is old enough now to understand what she’s missing out on. She can feel the gap between what she wants to do and what her body allows. There are moments of frustration and sadness when the limitations that come with cerebral palsy feel especially unfair. Watching her push through those feelings takes your breath away. Watching her struggle takes your breath away too.
And yet, even in the hard parts, there are miracles we don’t take for granted. Botox injections that help her use her hands better. Specialized wheelchairs designed so she can be as mobile and independent as possible. Therapy breakthroughs that look small from the outside but change daily life entirely. These tools and treatments are incredible. They help Hazel participate more fully in her world, and they give her family moments of relief and hope.
Why We Give
Children with cerebral palsy fight daily battles most of us will never fully see. Families carry that journey with love, persistence, and hope—leaning on therapy, research, and supportive communities to help their children thrive.
Courage Reins is part of that support system. Their equine-assisted therapy creates space for strength, mobility, and confidence to grow in ways that feel joyful and empowering.
