Five Years of Salt: A Letter to My Salt Family

Five years. I keep saying it out loud because I can hardly believe it.

This month, Salt by Sabrina turns five — though the truth is, I started building this dream more than six years ago, back when it was just a goal scribbled on a piece of paper: start a business.

Before I tell you where we're headed, I want to tell you where we started. Because the story of Salt is not really a story about custom drawer organizers. It's a story about finding peace in the middle of chaos — and about all of you who built this with me.

It started in 2020, in the middle of the chaos

Salt was born in 2020. My kids were suddenly home from school. My husband worked in the restaurant industry, and nothing about that felt certain. Like so many of you, I was searching for something — anything — I could control.

For me, that was organizing. It has always been my therapy. There is so much in life that is outside of our control, and creating order in one small space made everything else feel a little more manageable.

But every time I tried to organize my own home, the products failed me. The trays didn't fit my drawers. The bins slid around and fell apart. Nothing was made well, nothing lasted, and nothing was designed for my actual spaces. I didn't want more containers — I wanted a system designed for the space itself.

So I made one. Our first custom drawer organizer was crystal-clear acrylic, cut to the exact dimensions of a real drawer, with a layout built around how that drawer was actually used. Instead of forcing a drawer to accommodate an organizer, we created a made-to-fit organizer for the drawer. That one idea changed everything.

What five years actually looked like

Building Salt has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and one of the hardest.

We took out a loan on our house to start this business. There were seasons when I was certain we were done — when I sat with the numbers and couldn't see a way through. There were days I questioned why I ever went down this path at all.

And life didn't pause while I built a company. In these five years, I watched two of my kids graduate high school and my other two enter middle school. We added a puppy to our family. I fought two kinds of cancer — thyroid and breast — through five surgeries, and came back to this work more certain than ever of why it matters. Balancing entrepreneurship and family has been the hardest tightrope I've ever walked.

But here's what else these five years held: I've taught classes at universities. I've met the most extraordinary entrepreneurs — women and men who have changed how I see the world. I've learned more about business, marketing, operations, and myself than I ever imagined I could. This work became a passion I never expected to find in my forties, and I count it as one of the great gifts of my life.

From one drawer to a Utah-made custom system

What began as a single layout is now a collection of more than 85 custom acrylic drawer organizer layouts for kitchens, bathrooms, offices, laundry rooms, and every hardworking drawer in between. We've grown from two employees to a team of more than twenty people I am so proud of. We've earned four patents for our original designs.

And we made one of the most important decisions in our history: we brought our manufacturing home — first from overseas to the United States, and then fully in-house to Utah. Today, every organizer is crafted by our own hands, from the moment you send us your measurements to the moment your custom drawer system arrives at your door. That level of care simply couldn't be outsourced. Your trust is the promise we make with every order, and I wanted to own that promise completely.

Along the way, our work has been noticed in places I once only dreamed about — features and partnerships with names I grew up admiring. And every bit of that growth traces back to you: your orders, your referrals, your photos and stories of beautifully organized drawers.

The part I'm most proud of

Long before Salt, I did nonprofit work, and I always dreamed of being the person who could write the big check. That dream is a huge part of why I started this company.

So from the very beginning — before we ever turned a profit — I committed to donating a dollar from every organizer sold. Five years later, we've given about ten times what we originally committed, supporting more than twenty organizations: groups working to make sure everyone has a home and a place to belong, organizations advancing gender equality and helping women enter the workforce, groups supporting survivors of sexual abuse, and ones creating policies that make change permanent.

When things have been hard at Salt — and they have been hard — this is what carries us through. We know we're doing more than selling a product. Our mission has always been to create peace in the home, and our giveback lets that peace reach far beyond our customers' drawers.

A thank-you letter, five years in the making

So here we are. Five years of custom drawer organizers made-to-fit, made in Utah, and made with more love than I know how to put into words.

To everyone who took a chance on a small business with a big idea: thank you. To everyone who measured a drawer, left a review, told a friend, forgave us when we stumbled, and celebrated with us when we grew: you are the reason Salt exists.

Organization was never about perfection. It's about intention — a drawer that works so your morning moves a little easier, a kitchen that feels calmer, a home that asks less of you. You've let us bring that kind of peace into your homes, and it is the honor of my life.

Year six is already shaping up to be our biggest yet, and I can't wait to share what's coming. But today, I just want to say it plainly:
